How do I play?
Each board is split into as many coloured zones as it has rows. Place exactly one piece in every row, every column and every zone. Pieces may never touch, not even diagonally.
Double-tap a cell to place a piece. It is checked straight away. Tap once to place a cross, a private note that is never checked. Drag across cells to place several crosses at once.
Level 1 walks you through the rules the first time you play. After that, you can read them at any time with the "i" button.
Every round starts with 3 hearts. A wrong piece costs a heart and leaves a red cross, and a third mistake ends the round. Crosses never cost hearts. Hearts do not carry over: every new attempt starts with 3, with no waiting and nothing to buy. Losing a round never takes away your saved progress.
How do stars work?
No mistakes earns ★★★, one mistake earns ★★, and two or more earn ★. Time, hints and reveals never change your stars.
Each level keeps its best result, so replaying can only raise it. A lost or abandoned round changes no stars. With 100 levels, there are 300 stars to collect.
The daily puzzle's result card also shows stars, but they do not count toward the 300.
When does the daily puzzle change?
At midnight on your phone's clock. The home screen shows "Next board in …".
Everyone gets the same 10×10 board on the same calendar date, so players in other time zones get it at a different moment.
A board you start before midnight and solve after it counts for the day you started it. You can replay a daily after solving it, but only your first solve of the day counts for your streak. Changing your phone's date changes the board, but moving the clock back earns no shields or milestones.
How do streaks and shields work?
Your streak counts the days you solved the daily puzzle. Losing or quitting a daily does not break it, and you can try again. A day without a solve breaks the streak, unless a shield covers it. Milestones are at 3, 7, 14, 30, 50, 100 and 365 days.
You start with 1 shield and can hold up to 2. You earn one more each time your streak reaches a multiple of 7 (7, 14, 21 and so on), if you hold fewer than 2.
Shields are used automatically the next time you solve: one for each missed day, but only if you have enough to cover all of them. If you missed more days than you have shields, your streak starts again at 1 and you keep your shields. A shielded day keeps your streak alive but does not add to it.
While a solve today can still save your streak with shields, the home screen shows it as at risk.
What do hints and reveals do?
From level 6, and on the daily puzzle, each round has 3 hints and 1 reveal. Levels 1 to 5 have neither.
A hint never places a piece. It shows the next thing you could work out from your board: first, one of your crosses that is wrong; then, cells your pieces already rule out; then, the easiest next deduction. If there is none, it points to the zone with the fewest free cells. A hint that finds nothing to show is not used up.
A reveal places one correct piece in the zone where you are most stuck. It scores 0 points, but it does not break your combo or affect your stars.
Why was my round not counted?
Glowpane saves a round only if its moves can be replayed and checked. For example, a round is not saved if moves come less than 0.2 seconds apart, or if the board is solved faster than 0.5 seconds per piece.
Can I move my progress to a new phone?
No, not in this version. Your progress is saved only on the device where you play. It is not included in iCloud or computer backups, so restoring a backup to a new iPhone or iPad starts Glowpane from the beginning. Progress is not shared between devices, and deleting the app deletes it.
What languages is Glowpane in?
Glowpane speaks English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, German, French, Italian and Russian. It follows your device's language settings and uses English for any other language.
How do I turn the sound on or off?
Tap the speaker button on the game screen. Glowpane remembers your choice. The game also stays silent when your device is in Silent Mode, and its sounds play alongside your own music without stopping it.
